Trout Fishing

An important thing must be said right away, and that is this: Dix River Adventures is not at all in the business of guaranteeing "more fish" or "bigger fish". To place such a burden of expectation on the Adventure would be to spoil it. As a dear friend often reminds me, "Brad, fishing is always fun, even if the catching is a little slow." Having said that, it is also important to note that the Dix River Tailwaters has been declared by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife as "Trophy Brown Trout" water. Fed by the bottom discharge of the Lake Herrington Dam (250 ft. deep at the main channel), the water of the Dix averages about 55 degrees year round. It is also typically very clear, making the fishing experience tremendous. Anglers equipped with polarized sunglasses can easily sight fish.

However, because of greatly fluctuating water levels, fishing conditions can and often do change quickly.

Fishing Licenses

To obtain a fishing license online, go to https://fw.ky.gov/license/olpsintro.aspx. Licenses can also be purchased at retail stores (Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, etc.)  If purchasing a single day license, it is advisable to wait until the day before or the day of your trip, in case of the need to re-schedule (e.g., inclement weather).

Whether you're a veteran fly caster or someone who has never held a rod-and-reel, your Adventure is certain to be memorable. Brad can provide the gear, or you can use your own. Your 4-hour Adventure will begin and end at the High Bridge ramp, where the boat will be waiting for you on the water. Just a 10 minute boat ride will find you on a fishing spot only accessible by water (excluding private access).

Portage Add-On

For an extra angling advantage, book my Portage Add-on, which provides you the use of a 11ft., heavy-duty inflatable fishing boat. The package comes equipped with trolling motor and battery, rod holders, bench seating, and a stand-up fishing floor. This allows access to the precious 1-mile stretch of otherwise unreachable water between the rapids and the Lake Herrington Dam. Some of each season's largest Browns are caught right below the dam.

The boat easily accommodates 2 adult anglers. Add-On includes complete set-up and tear-down while you fish the hot stretches of the rapids. Set-up and launch typically takes 20-30 minutes, depending on conditions.
